However, they describe two different processes.

William Bridges, one of the most influential researchers in organizational change, suggested that change is the external event, while transition is the internal psychological process that people go through until they adapt to a new reality.

For example, the implementation of a new digital inventory management system in a company is the change. The period during which employees try to learn the new tool, feel uncertain, or compare the old system with the new one represents the transition.

According to Bridges’ model, transition consists of three stages:

Ending

People leave behind the old way of working. Feelings such as uncertainty, fear, or even resistance may often emerge.

Neutral Zone

This is often the most challenging phase. The old way has ended, but the new way has not yet become a habit. Productivity may temporarily decrease, while the need for communication and support increases.

New Beginning

People gain confidence, adapt to the new and the change gradually becomes part of their everyday work.

Understanding these stages helps us recognize that people’s reactions to change are not necessarily resistance, but a natural part of the transition process.

The key question, therefore, is: How can we support our teams in managing this transition, overcoming challenges, and ultimately embracing the new reality?

ADKAR: A Model for Successful Change

One of the most widely recognized change management models is ADKAR, developed by Prosci and Jeff Hiatt. It is an acronym representing the following five elements:

Awareness

People need to understand why the change is necessary.

Desire

Understanding is not enough. People need to develop the desire to participate in the change, which is strengthened when they understand how the change can positively impact them and their everyday work.

Knowledge

Employees need to acquire the necessary knowledge and information to operate effectively in the new environment.

Ability

Teams need opportunities to practice and apply what they have learned in real situations, so they can successfully adapt and perform.

Reinforcement

To sustain the change, continuous reinforcement is required through feedback, recognition, reminders, and ongoing support. Otherwise, there is a risk that people will return to previous habits.

Let’s explore ADKAR through the example above (a new digital inventory management system)

If a team member expresses the following concern: “I don’t understand why we need to change the system, since there hasn’t been any issue so far.”

This person needs support in developing Awareness, as they do not understand the “why” behind the change. This can be achieved through open communication and by presenting the data and challenges that the existing system does not adequately address.

If an employee says: “Another change? We are constantly trying to adapt to new situations.”

This may indicate a lack of motivation, emotional resistance, or change-fatigue. In this case, we need to strengthen Desire. A discussion about the personal benefits of the change could help increase engagement.

If someone says: “I don’t understand exactly how I will use this new digital tool in my daily work.”

This indicates a need to strengthen Knowledge, as the person does not yet know what they need to do. Practical training, guides and support materials would be valuable.

If someone says: “Even if I receive training on the new system, I am not sure I will be able to handle it effectively under the pressure of my daily responsibilities.”

This highlights the need to strengthen Ability. Practice, feedback and continuous support from experts or system champions can help people build confidence and capability.

Finally, if someone says: “The new application seems helpful, but if it is not connected with daily meetings, performance indicators, and decision-making, it will eventually be forgotten.”

In this case, knowledge has been acquired, but there is uncertainty about whether the new behavior will become sustainable. This is where Reinforcement becomes essential. This can be achieved by connecting the new system with KPIs, recognition, and rewards for successful adoption.

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, the success of any change depends largely on the people who are expected to embrace and implement it. The ADKAR model makes this even clearer, highlighting that change is not simply a process of introducing new tools or practices, but a human journey that requires understanding, support, and time.

Open communication, continuous monitoring of progress, feedback and encouragement are key elements for successful adoption of change.

Closing

Nowadays, change is constant and has become an integral part of professional reality. Organizations are continuously required to adapt to new technologies, changing market needs, different ways of working, and evolving expectations from their people.

The success of any change does not depend only on effective planning. It depends mainly on whether people understand the need for change, receive support throughout their transition, and develop the capabilities needed to adopt new ways of thinking and working.

Perhaps only then can people perceive Change as an opportunity – a Chance. And maybe it is not a coincidence that these two words differ by only one letter. 😉

Key Takeaways

Change is an external event, while transition is the internal process people experience until they accept and adopt the new reality.

The ADKAR model highlights the five key elements people need to successfully adopt change.

Successful change requires open communication, continuous support, feedback and the creation of an environment where people feel actively involved in the process.

At Game Tree, we offer learning experiences beyond the ordinary.

We design and implement customized training programs for corporate executives, leveraging experiential learning and educational gaming.

You can find more information about our services here.

In recent years, more organizations have been investing in Change Management.
